Pakistan rugby to make Asian Games debut

<strong>The Pakistan Rugby Union (PRU) will field the national team at the Asian Games for the first time in its history.</strong><br />

The squad will participate in the sevens event and according to PRU 
Secretary Arif Saeed, this will be Pakistan’s first high-profile event.<br />

“Before this, we have been participating in Asian tournaments or test
 series with India, but this is a great opportunity,” Saeed told <em>The Express Tribune</em>. “It’s a breakthrough for us. If all goes well, we will compete at the Asian Games.”<br />

Saeed added that preparations for the tournament are taking place and
 the players are training with temporary coach Chris Kumeroa of New 
Zealand.<br />

“Kumeroa is here for a short-term assignment,” said Saeed. “He is a sevens specialist and we are hoping to get good results.<br />

“But the dynamics of the game will be different. In the Asian Games, 
we can only use indigenous players and the nature of game itself is very
 different from 15-a-side format.<br />

“In fact, most countries have a different team for the sevens event, 
so preparing the national side for the Asian Games will be a different 
experience for us this time.”<br />

Saeed added that Pakistan can defeat teams like India and Mongolia, 
who are in the same division as Pakistan. However, he said that Japan, 
Hong Kong, Korea and even Sri Lanka could give the national team a tough
 time.<br />

<strong>Olympics calling</strong><br />

Rugby will be featured in the Olympics for the first time since 1924.
 This time, 12 teams will get a chance to qualify for the 2016 Rio Games
 sevens event.<br />

“It’s a great step,” said Saeed. “However, Pakistan will be focusing 
on the 2020 Olympics. The qualification path is open for this time as 
well, but there are 100 countries that play rugby and only 12 will 
compete at the main event, so our chances are almost non-existent.”<br />

Mahela Jayawardene scored an unbeaten 49 in his last Test innings as Sri
 Lanka took charge of the second and final match against Pakistan in 
Colombo on Saturday.</b><br />

The hosts, who trailed by 12 runs
 on the first innings, put on a strong batting performance to move to 
177-2 in their second innings by stumps on the third day at the 
Sinhalese Sports Club.<br />
<br />
Jayawardene and his close friend 
and long-time team-mate Kumar Sangakkara batted together for the last 
time in a Test match to put on 98 for the unbroken third wicket.<br />
<br />
Jayawardene,
 who was warmly applauded to the crease by Pakistani fielders and some 
4,000 home fans, played fluently to strike seven boundaries.<br />
<br />
Left-handed
 Sangakkara was unbeaten on 54, with Sri Lanka 165 runs ahead with eight
 wickets in hand on a wearing pitch expected to assist spinners on the 
last two days.<br />
<br />
Sri Lanka, who won the first Test in Galle 
by seven wickets, are hoping to sweep the short series to give 
Jayawardene, their former captain, a winning farewell.<br />
<br />
Upul
 Tharanga made 45 in an opening stand of 54 with Kaushal Silva before 
both batsmen were dismissed by left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman in the 
post-lunch session.<br />
<br />
Pakistan seamer Junaid Khan did not 
take the field in the second innings as he was taken to hospital and 
kept under observation after complaining of giddiness. Junaid, who took 
five wickets in the first innings, had been hit on the helmet by a 
rising ball from Dhammika Prasad in the morning session.<br />

Earlier,
 Pakistan´s wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed smashed a maiden Test century 
and Sri Lanka´s spinner Rangana Herath became the first left-arm bowler 
in history to take nine wickets in an innings.<br />
<br />
Sarfraz hit
 a gutsy 103 as Pakistan carried their overnight score of 244-6 to 332 
before they were all out at the stroke of lunch in reply to Sri Lanka´s 
320.<br />
<br />
Sarfraz, who came to bat after tea on the second day 
with Pakistan struggling at 140-5, led a remarkable fightback by the 
lower order that enabled the tourists gain the slender lead. But Herath 
grabbed attention in the eventful morning session by claiming the four 
remaining wickets to finish with 9-127, only the second Sri Lankan after
 Muttiah Muralitharan to take nine wickets in an innings.<br />
<br />
The
 36-year-old Herath, who surpassed his previous best of seven for 89 
against Bangladesh in Colombo last year, is currently the number one 
Test spinner in the official rankings. He has claimed 255 wickets so far
 in 57 Tests.<br />
<br />
Starting the day on 66, Sarfraz reached his 
hundred by hooking left-arm seamer Chanaka Welegedara for a six after 
pulling the previous delivery for a boundary. He was ninth out with 
Pakistan just six runs away from taking the lead when he edged Herath to
 give wicket-keeper Niroshan Dickwella his fifth catch in the innings.<br />

Last
 man Junaid hit an unbeaten 13 to help Pakistan go past Sri Lanka´s 
total. Herath, who earlier in the morning had dismissed Rehman (16) and

<strong>Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal was honoured on Independence
 Day for his bowling feats by being awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz — one of
 the highest civilian awards in Pakistan.</strong><br />

Ajmal’s bowling action has been questioned recently, but his performance to date was deemed worthy enough.<br />

Meanwhile, four athletes – cueist Mohammad Asif, mountaineer Samina 
Baig, boxer Amir Khan and tennis player Aqeel Khan – were given the 
President’s Award for Pride of Performance.<br />

Asif was previously snubbed for the award, but this time he has been 
included after strong reservations from the snooker fraternity last 
year.<br />

Asian squash champion Aamir Atlas Khan was awarded Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, 
while other recipients of the recognition comprise skier Mir Nawaz and 
hockey trio Munir Dar, Anwar Ahmed Khan and Abdul Waheed. Meanwhile, the
 Sports Journalism award went to Dr Nauman Niaz.<br />

Pakistan hope for peace with India through football series

<strong><strong class="location">LAHORE: </strong>Pakistan football 
captain Kaleemullah said Thursday he hoped a two-match series against 
arch-rivals India next week would lead to “peace and friendship” between
 the two sides.</strong><br />

Pakistan fly to Bangalore on Friday to play the series, the first between the neighbours in nine years.<br />

Football takes a back seat in cricket-mad South Asia but such is the 
rivalry between the two countries that any sporting clash attracts keen 
interest.<br />

“It’s a historic occasion and I hope a lot of doors, like that of 
peace, friendship and mutual cooperation will open with this short but 
important series,” Kaleemullah, who uses only one name, told AFP.<br />

The matches will be played in Bangalore on August 17 and 20.<br />

Kaleemullah said he set little store by the FIFA rankings, which put 
Pakistan, once a power in Asian football, 165th in the world, well below
 India at 151.<br />

“When Pakistan and India play each other, in any sport be it cricket, hockey or football, nothing matters,” said the striker.<br />

“The only thing which matters is that how the team handles the 
pressure and the team which handles the pressure well wins the day.”<br />

Pakistan football has shown some signs of improvement with 
Kaleemullah and Mohammad Adil signed by top Kyrgyzstan club Dordoi 
Bishkek.<br />

Last month Kaleemullah, 22, signed a two-year contract worth 10 million rupees ($10,000) with Dordoi.<br />

Kaleemullah said India will start the series as favourites.<br />

“We know they are a good team and with home crowd and home ground 
advantage they will have the edge but we will play to our potential and 
this series will be a close one.”<br />

Kaleemullah hoped the tour would also help Pakistani players to get 
recognition in the Indian Soccer League starting in October this year.<br />

“We have heard that Pakistani players used to feature in the 
Mohammadan League in Calcutta in 1950s and 1960s, so if we can impress 
with our talent there is always an opportunity that we can get 
recognition in the Indian league,” said Kaleemullah.<br />

“India is a huge sporting country and people love sports there and 
they welcome sportsmen and I am very hopeful that our tour will help us 
bring normal relationship on the sporting fields.”<br />

India stalled bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan in the aftermath 
of 2008 attacks on Mumbai, blamed on militants from Pakistan.<br />

That deadlock hurt cricket the most, a game millions are obsessed with on both sides of the border.<br />

However a breakthrough agreement signed last month could lead 
Pakistan and India to play six bilateral series in the next eight years 
pending New Delhi clearance, with the first in December 2015.<br />

“We can bring people closer with sports and football also has that power,” said Kaleemullah.

<b>Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul say that I’m trying to make a 
comeback in the Tests against Australia, but if that doesn’t happens I 
can quit from the Test format of the game.</b><br />
Gul has represented Pakistan in 47 Test matches and has taken 163 
wickets, he has taken 174 wickets in 124 ODIs and 80 wickets in 56 T20 
matches. The 30 year-old pacer said that he will decide his future after
 his fitness to play against Australia in United Arab Emirates (UAE).<br />
While talking to media, Gul said, ‘Right now, I don’t know what lies 
ahead for me because I am still not comfortable with the knee, I am 
hoping to make a comeback in the Tests against Australia but if that 
doesn’t happen I could quit Tests.’<br />
Gul underwent a knee surgery in 2013 at Australia after getting 
injured in the tour against South Africa earlier that year, he has 
already made two successful comebacks.<br />
Gul said, ‘The doctors have told me I still have to undergo more 
rehabilitation and gym training as there are still problems with the 
knee. I don’t feel comfortable bowling. If you ask me right now whether I
 can play Test matches I will say no.’<br />
He concluded, ‘I still have lot of cricket left in me but I don’t 
know what the selectors, or Pakistan team coaches, have planned for me, 
but I am eyeing a comeback against Australia.

<strong>Pakistan spin wizard Saeed Ajmal may miss the three match ODI
 series against Sri-Lanka, due to the ICC testing of his suspected 
bowling action within 21 days.</strong><br />

Ajmal’s action was reported by the umpires after the seven wicket 
loss to Pakistan in the 1st Test at Galle against Sri-Lanka, he will 
undergo an ICC testing within three weeks. The test will be conducted in
 England, Ajmal has the an option to skip the 2nd Test and go for the 
test or to play the 2nd Test and skip the ODI series and go for the 
test.<br />

A close official told the media, ‘Since Ajmal is going to play the 
second Test in Colombo, he would be left with only a handful of days to 
complete his testing.’<br />

The source further said, ‘At this moment, he is likely to miss the 
ODIs and travel for the tests on his action immediately after the 
Colombo Test ends. His chances of playing the ODIs appear thin, but his 
participation for any of the three games can’t be ruled out.’<br />

The three match ODI series between Pakistan and Sri-Lanka will began 
on 23rd August at Hambantota and will end on 30th August in Dambulla.

Pakistan´s Supreme Court on Monday ordered cricket authorities to hold 
fresh elections within a week to end a 14-month administrative crisis 
that has sparked international ridicule.</b><br />
<br />
The saga 
began in May last year when the then-chairman of the Pakistan Cricket 
Board (PCB), Zaka Ashraf, was suspended for holding dubious elections.<br />
<br />
Since
 then, Ashraf and journalist Najam Sethi have been engaged in a power 
struggle for the top job. Each was reinstated in turn while the other 
was thrown out of office through a series of court rulings and 
government decrees. Sethi is the current chairman, having been restored 
for the third time earlier this month.<br />
<br />
On Monday the 
Supreme Court said the PCB must hold fresh elections for the chairman´s 
post under its newly ratified constitution.<br />
<br />
Sethi said he 
would not not contest the election. "After today´s ruling I am restored 
until the elections are held and I will sit in the governing board but 
will not be contesting the election for chairman´s post," he announced.<br />
<br />
Local
 media last month reported that Sethi would create a new position of PCB
 managing director for himself, with the chairman becoming a ceremonial 
post. The report was denied by the body.<br />

"I had said 
before, and I am saying this now, that I had no long-term interest in 
the PCB and my long-term interest is only in the media," said Sethi, a 
long time newspaper editor and TV anchor.<br />
<br />
The musical 
chairs game for the top job has made the PCB a laughing stock overseas, 
with the International Cricket Council showing concern over who it 
should talk to on administrative matters. Traditionally, the government 
of the day has appointed its own candidate as head of the PCB, a system 
which has come in for criticism from former players including Imran

I think they both looked me in the eye and knew that I still have something to offer -- that I had a genuine desire to come here and play football," Ferdinand added. "I had a lot of offers from all over the world -- some in places with a better climate than here. But the draw for me was to play in the Premier League and back here where it all started. It´s not about money. I had loads of more lucrative offers available to me. I still feel I´ve got something to offer and I´m excited about helping this club cement its place in the Premier League."</div>

He was class on the field and off the field then, and he´s continued in that manner throughout his career. During his time at Manchester United, he was the best defender in Europe, if not the world.
