Drinking too much soda could affect adolescent memory, ability to learn

FILE - This Feb. 13, 2014 file photo shows sugary sodas in Sacramento, Calif. Since 2005, carbonated soft drinks have been in decline in the U.S. overall, said John Sicher, editor and publisher of the news and data service Beverage Digest. The overall volume has decreased from 10.2 billion cases to 9.2 billion cases. In terms of individual consumption, there's been a corresponding decline. Much of that consumption decline is due to a migration to other categories, primarily bottled water. Between 1999 and 2010, daily calories from soda consumed by 2- to 5-year-olds decreased on average from 106 to 69, according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which is conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics. Rich Pedroncelli/Associated Press

If former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg had waited just a bit longer to wage his public health battle against soda drinks, he could have had more ammunition.
Bloomberg had cited the well-known risks of obesity and diabetes that are associated with excess consumption of sugary drinks when he tried to ban oversized soda pop from being sold at some venues in the city.
But new research indicates drinking too much soda could also negatively affect the brain, especially for teenagers.
Researchers at the University of Southern California found that drinking beverages sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup or sucrose (that is, soda) every day can impair the ability to learn and remember information.
The research will be presented at the annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior in Seattle this week.
"It's no secret that refined carbohydrates, particularly when consumed in soft drinks and other beverages, can lead to metabolic disturbances," said Dr. Scott Kanoski, the lead author of the study, in a release.
"However, our findings reveal that consuming sugar-sweetened drinks is also interfering with our brain's ability to function normally and remember critical information about our environment, at least when consumed in excess before adulthood."
The researchers gave adult and adolescent rats daily access to sweetened beverages that matched the sugar content found in common soda drinks for 30 days.
Spatial learning trouble
At the end of the month, the researchers tested the rats on their cognitive functions using mazes.
They noticed that the adolescent rats had trouble with their spatial learning, which has to do with navigating the surrounding environment. The drinks also led to a glucose intolerance.
Adult rats, on the other hand, performed the tests normally.
Researchers discovered that when the teen rats drank those sugary beverages every day, it led to inflammation of the hippocampus part of their brains. The hippocampus controls memory and spatial sense. The inflammation is seen to be the reason behind the rats' learning impairment, according to the researchers.
"In many ways this region is a canary in the coal mine, as it is particularly sensitive to insult by various environmental factors, including eating foods that are high in saturated fat and processed sugar," said Kanoski.

England vs India third Test: Moeen Ali banned from wearing 'Save Gaza' and 'Free Palestine' wristbands by the ICC

The International Cricket Council has banned England cricketer Moeen Ali from wearing any wristbands with political messages on them after he was seen wearing “Save Gaza” and “Free Palestine”inscribed wristbands during his first innings in the third Test between England and India.
Former Australia batsman David Boon, who is the ICC’s match referee for the encounter at Southampton’s Aegas Bowl, has made the ruling after conflicting statements on Monday night left a state of confusion around the incident.
The ECB had cleared Moeen to wear the wristbands because he was making a humanitarian statement as opposed to a political one, but the ICC have taken a different approach.
A statement released by the ICC on Tuesday morning – ahead of the third day’s play began – read: “The ICC equipment and clothing regulations do not permit the display of messages that relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes during an international match.

“Moeen Ali was told by the match referee that while he is free to express his views on such causes away from the cricket field, he is not permitted to wear the wristbands on the field of play and warned not to wear the bands again during an international match.”

The act of support is in relation to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East as conflict between Israel and Palestine continues in Gaza, where the death toll has reportedly surpassed the 1,000 mark.
The entire England team will also wear the logo of the Help for Heroes charity on their shirts today in a commemorative gesture on the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.
Moeen made just 12 runs from 28 balls on Monday before Bhuvneshwar Kumar had him caught by Ajinkya Rahane, but it didn’t cost the hosts as centuries from Gary Balance and Ian Bell helped them to a total of 569-7d before leaving India on 25-1.

KARACHI: After the rescue workers recovered six more bodies from the Karachi beach on Thursday morning, the toll of drowned persons has risen to eighteen since Wednesday night, Geo News reported.

Despite a ban on swimming in the sea, more than a dozen persons drowned off Clifton beach here in the provincial capital on the second day of Eid-ul-Fitr. Three of the victims were the members of the same family whose bodies have been sent to their ancestral area.

According to sources at rescue services, the bodies of the deceased were shifted to Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre for completion of medico-legal formalities.

One of the drowned persons had been identified as 12-year old Manzar. The identities of the rest of the deceased are yet to be ascertained.

According to Geo News correspondent, citizens kept bathing and swimming in the sea throughout the day in violation of the ban imposed by the provincial administration on such activities in the monsoon season. This ultimately resulted in the death of eighteen people by drowning so far while the search for the rest is still continuing.

The tragic incident cast clouds of gloom on many families as festivities of Eid-ul-Fitr entered the third day today.

As a normal routine, people of all ages from the city and those coming from other parts of the country flock to seaside in large numbers to celebrate Eid with friends and family.

BoI sets up facilitation centres to encourage entrepreneurs, generate jobs

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM)/Chairman Board of Investment Dr Miftah Ismail said that BoI has established facilitation centers in Islamabad and provincial capitals Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta to generate more employment opportunities and to encourage entrepreneurs.
Under the vision of Prime Minister to generate more employment opportunities and to encourage entrepreneurs, Board of Investment has established facilitation centers in Islamabad and provincial capitals Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta, said Dr Miftah Ismail.
He was talking to the media regarding progress on this initiative of BoI. “Pakistan’s small, micro and medium enterprises are informal units. This part of the sector turns out much of the country’s private output and accounts for the largest portion of its jobs. However, it remains financially constrained, with little access to infrastructure, lack of knowledge regarding modern technology, disadvantaged when dealing with labour, and with virtually no ability to influence the policymakers”, said by SAPM/Chairman BoI.
He further mentioned that the contribution of SMEs to Pakistan’s economy, employment and poverty reduction can be seen from the fact that 90pc of all private sector manufacturing units employ less than 99 workers and the SMEs employ some 80pf of non-agricultural labour force. They contribute about 40pc to GDP and generate 25pc of exported manufacture.
So we have decided to start these facilitation centers to help this large segment of entrepreneurs to set up their businesses on a fast track basis and supporting them in starting a business dealing with construction permits, paying taxes, trading across borders and enforcing contracts, he apprised.  While talking to the media, he further said that hundreds of complaints and requests are received to the facilitation centers of BoI. Our facilitation centers have registered the issues of SMEs regarding lack of proper infrastructure un-skilled manpower shortage of finances access to the utilities, district police issues taxation issues competition acquiring of land getting NTN etc. necessary instructions regarding the concerned departments were given to resolve the issues of SMEs.
In reply to a query, he said that in addition to establishment of facilitation centres, BoI in consultation with Finance Division, FBR, SECP and EOBI including provincial governments have developed an implementation plan under Phase-I for investment facilitation and business improvement to simplify the procedures and to reduce the time/ cost for improvement of business climate in Pakistan,
In the world where SMEs have done well, it has been possible with institutional support for: (i) improving business environment, (ii) strengthening of support system;(iii) provision of institutional credit; (iv) facilitating technical and management skills; (v) fiscal concessions; and (vi) designing of an effective legal system.

They urged all the political parties to avoid staging sit-ins or protests, keeping in view the critical phase through which the country was currently passing.

ICC warns England player over support for Gaza

UNCONVENTIONAL: England player Moeen Ali looks on while wearing his cap back to front during day two of the third Test at Ageas Bowl in Southampton, England on Tuesday. Picture: STU FORSTER/GETTY IMAGES
SOUTHAMPTON — England’s Moeen Ali has been warned by cricket chiefs not to wear wristbands declaring support for the people of Gaza again during international matches.
But the International Cricket Council (ICC) said Ali would face no disciplinary action on this occasion after being warned about his future conduct by match referee David Boon.
Worcestershire all-rounder Ali wore wristbands during the third Test match against India on Monday that read "Save Gaza" and "Free Palestine", while batting during England’s first innings at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.
The conflict in Gaza is entering its fourth week, with the Palestinian death toll passing the 1,100 mark and 56 people losing their lives on the Israeli side.
Ali’s gesture led the ICC to say they were investigating his conduct and a spokesman for the global governing body said on Tuesday: "The ICC equipment and clothing regulations do not permit the display of messages that relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes during an international match.
"Ali was told by the match referee that whilst he is free to express his views on such causes away from the cricket field, he is not permitted to wear the wristbands on the field of play and warned not to wear the bands again during an international match."
Ali, a Birmingham-born practising Muslim of Pakistani descent, was photographed recently helping raise funds for Gaza relief efforts in his home city in central England.
Ali’s wristbands were only on public display for 42 minutes on Monday while he made 12 runs off 28 balls before he was caught off India seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. On Monday, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) insisted they had no issues with Ali’s conduct. "As far as we are concerned, he has not committed any offence," an ECB spokesman said, adding it was up to the ICC to decide what action, if any, Ali should face.
Meanwhile, other cricketers expressed their support of Ali on Twitter. "Absolutely love this! Well done Moeen bro! Keep showing your support! #Pray4Gaza" wrote former England cricketer Ajmal Shahzad.
"Good on brother mo! #prayforGaza" wrote Lancashire and former England bowler Kabir Ali, Moeen’s cousin.
"We have always worn wristbands or ribbons when showing support 4an incident or raising awareness, we do it for animal rights too, y not humans," wrote former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood on Twitter.
Before play began on the third day of the third Test yesterday, players and officials stood to observe a minute’s silence in memory of all those cricketers who fought and lost their lives in the First World War, a hundred years after the start of that conflict.
Meanwhile, the England players also wore shirts with the logo of Help for Heroes, a charity that assists wounded British armed forces veterans, stitched into the collar.
The question of what kinds of protest are permissible at sporting events has long been a thorny topic, with the Gaza conflict not just an issue for cricket.
On Friday, Malaysian cyclist Azizulhasni Awang was warned he risked being thrown out of the Commonwealth Games if he repeated wearing gloves bearing the message "Save Gaza". Awang could have been ejected from the Glasgow Games after wearing the gloves last Thursday. Instead he was given a reprimand and warned not to wear them again.
Though Awang said his message was "humanitarian" rather than politically charged, he issued an apology.

Unbelievable beauty secret of Aloe Vera

As an all around practical plant, the Aloe Vera has been used for centuries for various health and beauty regimens. We can date back to Cleopatra who used Aloe Vera on her body for hydrating and anti-aging her skin.
The plant has numerous benefits when applied onto the skin, with its antiseptic benefits it can help with skin bacteria including acne and psoriasis. Not to mention how affordable and convenient it is to purchase your own Aloe Vera plant. A stem alone can last you weeks! Forget spending tons of money on skincare and go for an all-natural regimen with Aloe Vera. We have a few basic uses to help curb your beauty issues.

How to Use

Let’s first start off by mentioning the best aspect about the Aloe Vera plant (besides its use of course!). The stem hasnatural healing properties so when you cut the plant, you can preserve it since it creates a hard barrier leaving the gel inside to stay fresh. Cut the plant from the root and slice a small portion of the stem, store the rest in a pla
stic bag for later use. Once you cut a small portion, slice it down the middle to use the gel directly onto your skin.

Acne Control
With its soothing properties, you can treat an outbreak of acne and prevent any pimples from occurring. You can improve the breakouts in about a week. Apply the gel on the area twice a day, letting it dry up. Although a week’s time is quite long when it comes to breakouts, you can use it as a preventative treatment.

In-Shower Exfoliant

Your skin can greatly benefit from exfoliating dead skin cells to reveal healthy, nourished skin. Slice a 2-3 inch portion and split it down the middle. Use the most inner part of the leaf as a natural body scrub. Rub it across your arms and legs and wash off with warm water, follow up with your shower gel. You can also add sugar for a rougher exfoliant.

Heated Mishaps

If you’ve gotten burned or accidentally touched a hot metal utensil, you can treat it using aloe vera gel. Its ideal to extract the gel from the plant and keep it in your fridge for easy use. The cooling sensation will help treat and heal the burn from causing any scars and to soothe the burn. Another way to use the chilled aloe vera is to heal sunburns. Apply it all over the affected area to treat it.

Treat Stretch Marks

If you’re a mom-to-be, pregnancy stretch marks are your biggest enemy. You can prevent and help heal any scaring with the gel’s essential nutrients and active compounds. Treat and get rid of any unbearable stretch marks by applying the gel onto the area and leave it on until it dries, apply this daily or even twice a day depending on how severe your scaring is.

Softer Feet

If you suffer from dull and chapped heals and feet, mix a bit of aloe vera into your body lotion. The gel will help hydrate the skin causing any cracked or discomfort to repair. The aloe gel will absorb really quickly into the skin without leaving behind a greasy texture.

Easy Toothbrush Beauty Hacks

Fixing common beauty problems is a piece of cake with a simple toothbrush! Who would’ve thought that a common toothbrush is the trick to smoother skin and tamed hair? Discover some easy and foolproof ways that a toothbrush can help you with your beauty routine

Smoother Lips
If you constantly wear lipstick, chances are you’ve suffered from peeling and patchy skin. Exfoliating your lips before applying any lipstick can easily be done with a toothbrush. Simply take the toothbrush bare and scrub your lips gently since the bristles can be rough.

Comb Unruly Eyebrows
For those with thick brows, combing them is an absolute must! Spray your toothbrush with hairspray and comb them so that they set into place. The hair will stick exactly where you left it. No more messy brows

Exfoliate Dark Patches
If your hands and feet are tanned, removing these patches by exfoliating them with a mixture of baking soda, water and lemon juice. The lemon will work to lighten pigmentation while the baking soda and toothbrush bristles will help to exfoliate the dead skin to reveal even skintone.

Easy Back Combing
If you don’t have a thick bristle brush to backcomb your hair, a toothbrush will do the trick. The tiny bristles will easily create volume at the root of your hair. This easily works for the crown and foremost section of hair.

Brush Tiny Hair
Baby hair around your face can be untamed and tend to fly all over your face. Taking a toothbrush, spray it with hairspray and use it to comb the tiny hair to set it in place. Similar to using it for your eyebrows, the hairspray and tiny bristles easily keeps the flyaways in place.

Scrub Dirty Nails
If your nails are in need of some serious cleaning, using a toothbrush will help scrub away stained nails and remove dirt from under the nails. Take your toothbrush with some baking soda and scrub it on your nails. You can also use it with nail polish remover to get rid of stained nails.
